Human waste traps Mams West residents inside their flats

They believe the cause of the floods is a blocked manhole in Block 1.

Residents of Mamelodi West flats near Kingsley hostel were trapped inside their units last week after human waste flooded the premises right up to their doorstep.

The residents believe the cause of the flooding is a blocked manhole in Block 1.

Residents on the ground floor had human waste up to the doorstep.

Resident, Papiki Nkgudu said: “We woke up last week trapped inside our flats with human waste almost at our doorsteps.

“We thought maybe the heavy rain caused the blockage and the problem would slowly subside but the worst was still to come.

“Over the weekend, the level of the excrement rose further and on Monday, some of the children were unable to go to school because they could not jump over the pool of human waste,” Nkgudu said.

The residents claimed that about 32 ground level flats had human waste up to their doorsteps.

Violet Masote, another resident, said she went to Tshwane metro Mamelodi office to report the blockage and flooding on Monday.

“We even explained to the officials that the matter was an emergency and needed to be fixed as soon as possible.

“We were told they were going to send officials to come fix the manhole and we are still waiting.”

She said she still couldn’t get to her car because her parking bay is flooded.

Residents on the ground floor had human waste up to the doorstep.

“We are pleading with the metro to find a permanent solution to this problem.

“Our health is at risk. We are worried for our children.”

Masote said the place stank and they had to keep windows and doors closed.

She said soon the area will experience a mosquito infestation.

The residents said there were many small children in the block who needed to expend energy playing but there is nowhere to play.

Rekord is yet to obtain a response from the metro despite numerous requests for comment.
