Law enforcement, metro raid various sites in CBD
A further four businesses were fined for operating with expired licences and numerous illegal traders were removed from their spots.
The metro and its stakeholders shut down two businesses in the CBD recently for non-compliance with health regulations.
A further four businesses were fined for operating with expired licences and numerous illegal traders were removed from their spots and encouraged to apply for trading licences to operate.
Tshwane mayor Randall Williams alongside members of the Tshwane metro police (TMPD), private security companies and others attended the effort to “clean up” the CBD and ensure by-law compliance.
“By-laws are laws that are passed by the council of a municipality to regulate its affairs and the services the municipality provides in its area of jurisdiction,” said Williams.
The relevant parties also took their operation to Venning Park in Arcadia where residents expressed concerns over safety and security in the area.
Mayor Williams said that he has instructed the TMPD to heighten visibility in the area while the metro looked for more permanent solutions to deal with the ongoing crime.
“The TMPD, assisted by Pro Shield, a private security company, managed to clear Lion Bridge of drug users and will continue to visit the bridge for more raids,” Williams said.
The business shutdowns in Robert Sobukwe Street in Sunnyside were a result of the multiple raids by the departments of economic development and spatial planning and health as well as the SAPS.
Violations of health and safety regulations as well as the Liquor Act were the main reason behind the businesses being reprimanded.
“Our multiparty coalition government is committed to enhancing safety and keeping Tshwane clean. This is our second major law enforcement operation this month and we are planning many more going forward,” Williams concluded.
