Drunk drivers and undocumented immigrants behind bars
Three out of the ten most wanted suspects in the Rietgat police radar were also arrested in connection with business robberies. The fourth suspect was nowhere to be found in Jukulyn but police said they know where he is.
Eight drunk drivers and 15 undocumented immigrants were arrested over the weekend during operation Reclaiming the Night in Jukulyn, Soshanguve.
The operation was led by Rietgat station commander Brigadier Molatelo Maphoto, Gauteng MEC Faith Mazibuko and other stakeholders.
Maphoto said they had to have this operation in Jukulyn because it is one of the most stubborn places in the fight against crime in the area.
He said the community was out in numbers to give them tip-offs on where to search.
“We heeded the information that the community gave us which led to some of these arrests,” he said.
Three out of 10 most wanted suspects on the police radar were also arrested in connection with business robberies.
The fourth suspect could not be found in Jukulyn but police said they knew where he is.
“Now that we’ve squeezed the space, he ran to Limpopo, Polokwane but we are in contact with the police in Polokwane who will arrest him and we will go and pick him up,” he said.
One suspected drug dealer was also arrested.
“The amount of nyaope he had in his possession showed that he is a kingpin responsible for distributing drugs in Jukulyn.”
Maphoto encouraged the community to come forward and give the police information about crime so that they can be able to address it.
Mazibuko said they needed to make sure that they get rid of crime before the festive season.
She said it was shocking to find taverns with underage girls and boys drinking alcohol.
“We went into this tavern, I just didn’t get the name of it but the owner ran away when we got there because he was serving alcohol to school kids,” she said.
She advised parents to check on their kids around this time to ensure that they’re not involved in anything that could land them in trouble.
“Check on your kids, when a child leaves the house to go play in the morning, make sure you phone your child to come for lunch as well as dinner,” she said.
She said the operation will leave the residents of Jukulyn in peace.
All suspects are expected to appear in the Soshanguve magistrate’s court soon.
