Emergency measures to supply water to Kalafong hospital

Contingency plans include increasing the number of water tankers bringing water to the facility.

Kalafong hospital had to implement emergency contingency measures to keep operations going while the metro struggles to supply water.

During an oversight visit to the Atterigdeville-based clinic by Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, it was revealed that the hospital has been facing many challenges due to the ongoing water shortages and restrictions around the area.

“The water outage led to the hospital’s two 748 000 and 480 000 litre reservoirs running extremely low,” said the health department.

Over the weekend, the Tshwane metro said that the Atteridgeville HL reservoir had been emptied as a result of Rand Water’s ongoing system challenges, which resulted in the water supply to the metro being disrupted.

“Contingency plans include increasing the number of water tankers bringing water to the facility and the frequency of supply to keep operations going.

About 60 000 litres of water has been delivered to the facility. There are provisions in place to make water accessible to all patients in each ward,” said Nkomo-Ralenhoko.

The department said it was in contact with the local authority and the water utility to provide health facilities with water and regular updates.

“We will continue to monitor the situation in Tshwane closely,” Nkomo-Ralehoko said.

Residents were urged to limit their water usage to avoid a possible supply shut-down amid the metro’s increasing water woes.

The metro states that ongoing load-shedding has had devastating effects on its network infrastructure as service availability depends on electric pumps.

To regulate water supply, the metro resorted to throttling the various reservoirs that supply water to many areas.
