Local Barcadi artist killed in Sunday shooting

Police said the motive of the shooting is not yet known at this stage.

Local Barcadi artist Itumeleng Mosoeu, better known as Vusi Ma R5, was shot and killed Sunday evening in Soshanguve.

The shooting happened outside a local club along the M17 in Soshanguve ext. 13, where Mosoeu was booked to perform.

Akasia police spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mdluli Mabasa confirmed that there was a shooting.

She said the police received a complaint shortly after the incident and responded swiftly.

“One male was found deceased with gunshot wounds on his body,” she said.

While the police could not yet confirm the deceased’s identity, Tribal Records, however, issued a statement on Monday confirming Mosoeu’s death.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Vusi Ma R5, a beloved and talented artist who inspired countless fans and fellow artists with his music. The artist, Itumeleng Mosoeu, allegedly ran into an unfortunate incident that led to his untimely passing in the early hours of Monday morning.”

Details of the funeral and memorial service will be confirmed.

Police said the motive of the shooting is not yet known at this stage. They urged anyone with further information to come forth to bring the perpetrators to book.

On Monday morning, fans took to social media to pay tribute to Mosoeu.

His passing left many in shock and disbelief as his career was starting to take shape.

Fans said they would remember him for his stage performances, which he matched with the energy of the crowd and dance moves that often left fans cheering.

Record label Open Mic Productions also took to social media to pass on words of condolences to his family.

“Condolences to the family and friends of the king of Barcadi #vusimaR5 may your legacy and spark in the industry live forever,” the label said on Twitter.
