726 arrested in Atteridgeville weekend operation

12 premises were inspected and searched, leading to four (4) illegal shebeens being closed down and 424 900ml of liquor being confiscated.

Seven hundred and twenty-six people were arrested during several Tshwane district police multidisciplinary operations over the weekend.

Arrests were for offences including driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of drugs, possession of counterfeit cigarettes, drinking in public, possession of housebreaking implements and possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.

Detectives arrested 217 suspects, 15 of which for gender-based violence (GBV) crimes, 29 illegal immigrants, two for drug possession and six for public drinking.

In total, 1 773 people and 1 234 vehicles were searched resulting in 126 Aarto infringement notices being issued to the value of R55 850.

Twelve premises were searched, leading to four illegal shebeens being closed down and 424 900ml of liquor confiscated.

According to Warrant-officer Johan van Dyk, the operations were headed up by district commissioner Major-General Azwinndini Nengovhela.

“With Major-General A Nengovhela ensuring that enough boots were on the ground, three groups were assembled to enforce several policing activities,” said Van Dyk.

“Major-General A Nengovhela would like to express his appreciation towards all officers who participated in this operation.”

Other law-enforcement entities involved included the departments of community safety, correctional services, home affairs and labour.

Tracker, the Gauteng traffic department and the TMPD and members from SAPS units and stations from the Tshwane policing area also took part.
