Unrest situation under control, Olievenhoutbosch police say

“We will monitor the situation until normality is restored.”

The situation in Olievenhoutbosch, where various land grabs were reportedly taking place, has been brought under control by the local police.

Police spokesperson Colonel Adolf Corbett said the situation was calm on Tuesday afternoon.

“We managed to contain the situation. Thus far, we have not made any arrests as far as the protest is concerned,” said Corbett.

On the question of whether the police were aware of residents being advised to vacate their premises, Corbett said he was not aware of this.

He, however, confirmed that the situation was brought to normality since last night, adding that there were no new incidents of violence in the area.

Tshwane metro police department spokesperson Isaac Mahamba confirmed that the department accompanied the service provider that was tasked with removing illegal shacks erected by land grabbers.

“Yesterday, we accompanied the service provider to secure their safety,” Mahamba said.

In addition, Mahamba said the service providers managed to do their job without any hindrance.

“The service provider managed to demolish about 600 illegal shacks,” he said.

Mahamba also confirmed that the situation was calm, adding that the metro police were monitoring the area until such time normality was restored.

Last week Rekord published an article about farmer Hennie Henrico who was granted an eviction order by the Johannesburg high court.

This was after land grabbers had occupied his land back in October 2022.

At the moment it is not yet established if Monday’s eviction was related to his farm or not.
