Laudium police celebrate a successful conviction of a 32-year-old male for possessing drugs

Three men were sentenced to 21 years imprisonment following house robbery and attempted murder convictions.

Laudium police have welcomed the conviction of 32-year-old Rosh Thambiram for being in possession of drugs.

Police spokesperson Simon Chokoe said police were doing their normal stop-and-search routine last year when they spotted a suspicious vehicle and stopped it.

“Police were performing normal visibility patrol and stop-and-searches around Laudium.

“They spotted a white Nissan Almera driving along 19th Avenue.

“Upon searching both the occupants and the vehicle, one man was found in possession of drugs (Mandrax) and he was immediately arrested,” said Chokoe.

Thambiram was sentenced to one year behind bars.

In a separate matter, Sergeant Motubatsi successfully secured the conviction of Alterno Edwin Nkundika, accused for common assault, to six months imprisonment.

Chokoe congratulated his colleague.

The station also celebrated the conviction of three men for a house robbery in July of 2021.

Vusi Chabangu (31), Themba Mabaso (27) and Mathew Mubazi (21) were sentenced to 21 years direct imprisonment.

“All suspects were convicted of armed robbery [and sentenced] to 13 years direct imprisonment, and eight years for two counts of attempted murder which will run concurrently.”

Acting station commander Captain Ashraaf Packree applauded acting branch commander Warrant-Officer Sarah Ndora and the officers involved for their continuous hard work and success.

According to Crime Check, Laudium police station has managed to significantly drop theft by a staggering 12.4% from 121 cases reported in 2021 to 106 cases reported in 2022. Attempted murder has also decreased by 43% down to 15 cases reported in 2022 from 26 cases reported in 2021.

Chokoe said these significant drops were due to the police’s endless quest to fight crime and root out criminal elements in the area.
