Metro invests R18m in Pretoria West training college

“Developing artisan skills is critical, especially during this time when our country is battling constant load-shedding and water supply outages.”

The Tshwane metro announced that it had recently invested R18-million to an artisan training centre in Pretoria West.

“Developing artisan skills is critical, especially during this time when our country is battling constant load-shedding and water supply outages,” said Tshwane mayor Randall Williams.

“Undoubtedly, we need more trained plumbers and electricians to help us address this crisis.”

The metro said the investment would boost the centre’s training intake, giving participants the skills needed to assist the metro in future.

Tshwane Leadership and Management Academy (TLMA) has long-standing training programmes in which students can gain artisan skills such as electrical, vehicle mechanic, welding, fitting and turning, boiler making and plumbing.

The announcement was made during an oversight visit to the centre.

Mayor said the metro wanted to monitor progress on the expansion of the training centre’s plumbing and water-related skills department.

“The City has identified an urgent need to increase plumbing skills training for it to have a pool of skilled labour to address water losses caused by aged infrastructure,” Williams continued.

The metro says the expansion will triple the current annual intake of 15 plumbing apprentices to 45 and the artisan programme to 120 annually.

Other benefits included the introduction of water services practitioner qualifications, the opportunity to train and upskill existing City staff and training in new water conservation technologies.

“TLMA is doing good work and I would like to encourage the entire team to continue with their efforts,” Williams concluded.
