Missing Centurion man (71) spotted as far as Brits, Nelspruit
“GT went out to buy a cold drink when we last saw him,” says his sister Rita.
The family of a 71-year-old man from Centurion are desperately searching for him after he went missing in Brits in the North West.
Gidieon Theodorus “GT” van der Merwe, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, was last seen just outside Nelspruit after he was spotted at a petrol station in Brits.
He initially went missing driving an A-Class Mercedes Benz in Eldoraigne, Centurion, on Wednesday.
According to Van der Merwe’s brother-in-law, Hendrik Venter, he left home to get a cold drink but never returned.
“He ended up in Brits where the security company spotted him on their red camera at the petrol station.
“Today (Thursday) we just got information that he was now in Nelspruit, so we are making arrangements with the security company that saw him for us to fetch him,” Venter said.
His sister Rita van der Merwe said he was also spotted in Hartbeespoort by another security company.
“Later we got the report that he was last seen in Brits at a petrol station at 06:30 this morning (Thursday),” Van der Merwe said.
Rita said she remains hopeful that Van der Merwe will return home safely. During the time he went missing, he was wearing black denim and a white and black shirt.
Anyone with more information on his whereabouts is urged to contact Rita at 083 300 5302 or Hendrik at 079 496 7221 or the Wierdabrug police at 08600 10111/112.
