Locals host seminar on sexual violence in CBD
How to help victims of rape was the main topic of discussion.
Sexual violence and, in particular, rape were some of the issues addressed during a recent seminar in the Pretoria CBD recently.
The organisers, social activists and partners hosted the educational session to promote healthy and respectful relationships as a means to ending sexual violence, which remained a concern for the local community.
Session chairperson and member of local social activist organisation African Leadership Movement (ALM), Clement Chauke, said the for the latest session was “Breaking the silence around rape”.

“South Africa is one of the countries that is massively embraced for its diversity.
“However, this image is tarnished by the other label – rape capital of the world,” said ALM representative Boipelo Letlape.
Known for his undying passion, Chauke and the ALM aim to rebuild the broken fabric of society, especially within the black community. They believe they are the voice of the voiceless regarding rape.
The event was held at Grace IAG Church, which ALM said played a very important role as sponsor and supporter of the cause.

How to help victims of rape was the main topic of discussion.
The event was supported by various stakeholders including anti-rape advocates, an attorney and legal analyst, a clinical psychologist and relationship expert as well as a representative from Unisa.
“We were able to achieve our objectives through these concrete partnerships and being open to dialogue and assessments that helped bring tools for psychological, emotional, spiritual and overall physical well-being to cultivate a better nation,” Letlape said.
“The cry of our beloved country surrounding rape is too loud and this was evident with the presence of rape victims who courageously shared their real-life stories.”
The event ended with a demonstration against rape and GBV in Pretorius Street in Pretoria CBD and a birthday celebration for Chauke.
