Man (34) arrested for hijacking in Eersterust

The owner of the car was approached by two suspects brandishing a firearm.

Eersterust police have arrested a 34-year-old man for possession of a bakkie hijacked on Sunday morning.

The car was hijacked on Stormvoël road between Eersterust and Mamelodi, according to Eersterust police spokesperson Sergeant Sam Shibambo.

He said the car belonged to a 30-year-old man who was hijacked while his car was stationary.

“The victim was resting by the side of the road with an engine running when he was accosted by two suspects brandishing a firearm,” said Shibambo.

“He was robbed of his vehicle and left stranded by the side of the road.

“He, however, managed to report the matter to the police and the tracking company.

“The vehicle was tracked to a house at Platt Avenue where the 34-year-old suspect was arrested.”

The suspect appeared at the Pretoria magistrate’s court on Monday.

Shibambo urged residents to be extra-vigilant when driving through this area as it has become a hotspot for hijackings.

The police have provided a list of things victims of hijackings should and should not do during an attack:

Dos:

– Do everything the perpetrators tell you to

– Try at all times to maintain your pride, dignity and self-respect.

– Allow yourself to be led by your captor(s)

– Try to remain cool and calm.

Don’ts:

– Don’t at any time become panic-stricken or hysterical.

– Don’t offer any form of resistance.

– Don’t become abusive and aggressive or lose your temper.

– Don’t threaten or provoke the captor(s).

– Don’t try to be a hero.
