Sinoville CPF urges elderly to be vigilant at ATMs
A warning has been sent out to community members in Sinoville and surrounding areas of the rise in ATM robbers.
The Sinoville CPF has raised concerns about the increasing number of ATM robberies, especially involving the elderly.
The community organisation warned locals in the areas where the spike was noted to be vigilant.
Sinoville CPF public relations officer Lizette du Plooy said the elderly were targeted as they were “soft targets”.
She suggested residents adhere to the following safety precautions to avoid falling victim:
– ask someone you trust to accompany you if you feel uncomfortable or unsure.
– be aware of your surroundings.
– avoid using ATMs in unlit areas.
– walk away if you feel someone lingering behind you.
– never write your PIN down or keep it together with your bank card.
– never let anyone stand close to you while using the ATM.
– ready your card before you approach the ATM.
– cover the keyboard with your hand as you enter your PIN.
– do not count or display your cash at the ATM. Rather immediately place it in your purse and walk away.
– be suspicious of persons who ask you to return to the ATM to complete your transaction, this could be an attempt to skim your card.
Skimming is the obtaining of data from a card – debit or credit – by inserting it into a reader that copies information such as card number, security code and PIN. Thieves can alter a legitimate ATM for this purpose.
