Laerskool Villieria turns 120
The school has a rich history and one of its former learners was architect Gerard Moerdijk, who is well-known for designing the Voortrekker Monument.
Laerskool Villieria recently celebrated a huge milestone in the school’s history – a 120th birthday!
On Friday, February 3, teachers and learners met at the WJ Obeholzer sports ground to celebrate the momentous occasion.
The birthday, officially marked annually on February 4, was celebrated a day earlier to accommodate the learners.

The celebration begun with formalities including an address by school principal David Haasbroek, singing of the “Lyfie” song and the school anthem as well as the release of pigeons to symbolise peace.
The principal then cut a massive cake before the 1 046 learners in attendance had an opportunity to play and picnic.
“If you want to have a successful future, you must never forget where you come from,” principal Haasbroek said.

“You would not know where you are going to when you do not know where you are coming from.”
He said the school was established in 1903 with only 19 leaners.
One of its former learners was architect Gerard Moerdijk, famous for designing the Voortrekker Monument.
“Moerdijk’s father was the first principal of the school and the school had 10 principals up until now.”
Grade 7 learner and school leaders, Michaela Jacobs (13) said she felt proud and honoured to be part of the school’s 120th birthday.
