North man arrested for unlicensed firearms
Local law enforcement agencies at the scene discussed the problem and police stations in the area have put together a combat team which will be monitoring crime hotspots along the R80.

A north man was arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms following a roadblock check on the corner of the R80 and R566 roads on Monday.
Akasia police spokesperson Lindiwe Mabasa said the police manning the roadblock stopped a vehicle with two occupants.
During their search, an unlicensed firearm, magazines and ammunition were recovered from the passenger.
He said the passenger’s home was then raided and another unlicensed firearm, toy firearm and ammunition were found.
He said the police had increased the frequency of roadblocks on this road because of the rising number of tyre-spiking incidents on the N4.

Rekord recently reported that a couple was robbed by a “spike” gang.
Mabasa said gangs place spikes on the road to force motorists whose tyres punctured to a stop and then rob them.
She said tyre-spiking was one of the many tactics criminals used on the R80 to rob victims of their belongings.
In October last year, a local community protest against the muggings on the bridge across the R80 failed to materialise.

Since then local law enforcement agencies have put together a combat team to monitor crime hotspots along the road.
The Akasia police, their colleagues in the Gauteng highway patrol and K9 units participated in the latest roadblock.
