Husband accused of police graduate’s murder in court again next week

Phora was found murdered on New Year’s Day. Once all the necessary investigations have been completed, the case will be transferred to the North Gauteng High Court.

The husband of murdered Phinderia Botshelo Phora (31), a police graduate, will appear in the Mamelodi magistrate’s court again on February 14 in connection with her death.

Once all the necessary investigations have been completed, the case will then be transferred to the North Gauteng High Court.

The accused, a local prison warder, appeared in the Mamelodi magistrate’s court on January 11 on murder charges.

Phora, who was among the 10 000 newly trained police officers that graduated in December last year in Pretoria West, was found dead on New Year’s Day.

Mamelodi magistrate’s court senior prosecutor Advocate Anne-Marie Bendeman said the husband was arrested the following day.

“Phora’s body was found by a neighbour in a back room of the couple’s home in Mamelodi,” Bendeman said.

“Phora had just completed a police training programme which took months.”

According to Bendeman, investigations revealed Phora had been hit with an unknown object then strangled to death with a cord.

She said the accused was arrested after being admitted to hospital after what appeared to be a suicide attempt involving poison.
