Three die in bakkie-truck Garsfontein crash

“The truck driver escaped with only minor injuries.”

Three people were killed in a traffic accident in Garsfontein in which a bakkie and a truck collided head-on yesterday.

The accident happened on the Garsfontein Road extension in Bashewa, according to the Vemru volunteer emergency response unit, which was on the scene.

“Upon arrival, we found five persons trapped in the bakkie,” said Vemru spokesperson Casper Visser.

“Specialised rescue equipment was used by Tshwane metro firefighters and Gauteng emergency medical services to free them.”

Three were declared dead on the scene.

“One accident victim sustained critical injuries and was stabilised by Gauteng emergency medical services and private service Advanced Life support paramedics before being airlifted to a specialist hospital for further treatment.

“Another person was treated on scene for serious injuries before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care.

“The truck driver escaped with only minor injuries,” Visser said.
