Metro shuts down illegal CBD waste business

The business was operating unlawfully on City-owned property.

The Tshwane metro shut down an illegal waste storage and sorting business in the Pretoria CBD during a by-law operation on Wednesday.

The business was operating unlawfully on City-owned property, according to the Tshwane metro police (TMPD) and the economic development and spatial planning department.

The business could not produce a valid licence to operate.

Businesses of this nature require permits from the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, but the department said it had no record of this operation.

“The owner was given seven days to clear the site entirely,” said mayor Randall Williams.

Williams said the business was in “clear contravention of the National Environmental Management Act and was operating without a valid lease.”

The TMPD will be monitoring the site regularly to ensure that only approved trucks are transporting material out of the property.

“We will not tolerate lawlessness or any lack of compliance by local businesses,” he said.

“We will continue to conduct these operations, issue fines or even shut down businesses when necessary.”

The metro said it next wants to disconnect defaulting clients as it is owed over R50-million by clients in Pretoria West, including a government facility.
