Eersterust residents urged to be careful around cemetery
Two people have been robbed at gunpoint at the cemetery over the past two weeks.
The SAPS in Eersterust is warning residents to be extra vigilant while visiting or taking a shortcut through the Eersterust cemetery.
Many residents walk through the cemetery daily on their way to and from work.
According to the Eersterust police, two people were robbed of their belongings at gunpoint while passing through the cemetery in the past two weeks.
“The police have since intensified the patrols in that area and investigation is underway to try and apprehend the suspects involved in the recent robberies,” said Eersterust police spokesperson, Sam Shibambo.
The cemetery has become a hideout for criminals and many of the tombstones have been vandalised or stolen.
Residents fear visiting the cemetery with many refusing to visit out of fear for their safety.
The police provided the following safety tips for victims of violent crimes:
– Comply, remain calm and do not argue with crime perpetrators.
– Do not make sudden gestures.
– Avoid eye contact but try to remember what the perpetrator looks like by identifying and remembering special features, such as scars, etc.
– Try to get away safely from the area as quickly as possible.
– Do not try and be a hero, your life is worth more than your possessions.
The police also advised against walking alone in potentially dangerous areas such as the cemetery.
In case of an emergency, call the police emergency number on 10111.
