Metrorail temporarily suspends Saulsville trains after collision

A team of technical experts was dispatched to the scene in order to assess the collision.

All Saulsville trains will be temporarily suspended due to a train collision on the Saulsville line on Monday.

Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) has confirmed the train collision between train 1800 and train 002.

Prasa spokesperson Andiswa Makanda said there were no passengers on the trains.

“There were no passengers on either train and neither of the train drivers was injured. The preliminary investigation suggests that the cause of the incident was due to human error,” said Makanda.

She added that a full-blown investigation would be held and that the outcome of that investigation would be announced as soon as the investigations were concluded.

“Train 1800 consisted of 12 coaches and both trains are the new EMU trains. The trains have been successfully separated and re-railed.”

Makanda said the agency has reported the incident as it was required by the operating licence.

She further said a team of technical experts was dispatched to the scene to assess the incident.

In addition, Makanda affirmed the agency’s commitment to providing safety for its passengers, saying that it regretted what had happened.

According to a Metrorail spokesperson Lilian Mofokeng, all Saulsville trains would be temporarily suspended.

Commuters going to Pretoria from Mabopane and De Wildt have been advised to seek alternative transport until the scene is cleared.

During the transport month in October 2022, transport minister Fikile Mbalula officially opened the Pienaarspoort to Pretoria rail corridor whose services were suspended.

The government introduced the restoration of rail corridors in April 2021 after infrastructure was vandalised and looted as there was no security just before the beginning of the lockdown in 2020.

As the government implemented the lockdown, vandalism got worse, forcing the agency to shut down most of Gauteng’s rail lines.
