New Boschkop detective has open-door policy

Marias Smit says complainants are welcome to visit his office if they are not satisfied with anything related to the detectives handling cases in their precinct.

The newly appointed head of the Boschkop police station’s detectives says that he has an open-door policy when it comes to the public.

“Captain Marias Smit wants to build a good relationship with the community,” said Boschkop police spokesperson Sergeant Yeroboam Mbatsane.

“He wants to solve cases that were not finalised and further investigate outstanding cases and trace known suspects.”

Smit was appointed in January 2023 to head the station’s detective branch.

Smit believes that gaining a better information base from the community would allow police to tackle crime effectively, by allowing for visible policing and disrupting criminal operations.

He said this as the Bochkop policing precinct had a lack of resources.

Smit said complainants were welcome to visit his office if they were not satisfied with anything related to the detectives handling cases in their precinct.

He said this as he was hellbent on investigating cases that were not finalised.

“Smit has improved the tracing and arrest of the known suspects while implementing strategies to speed up the arrests of known suspects.”

Mbatsane said Smit wanted the community’s help with information on property and violent crimes in the area.

He previously worked as Pretoria Central group coordinator for serious and violent crimes.

“The community is welcome to bring any information to him as he has an open-door policy.”

Minister of Police Bheki Cele has also called on residents to assist police in fighting crime.

“We are calling on residents in policing areas with stubborn crime patterns, to be agents and activists against crime.

“Someone somewhere, somehow knows something! It is the job of the police to prevent, combat and investigate crime, assisted by better environmental design and better social conditions,” Cele said.

“A community-centred approach in the prevention and combating of crime will yield better results.

“Safety partnership means you are no longer a spectator but an active player in keeping your community safe.”
