Ex-offender turns to fashion designing
It all started when he altered the too-big prison clothes given to him.
Ali Chauke (33) from Mamelodi East Phase 5, also known as “Ali Designer”, found his passion for designing clothes while in prison.
Chauke was found guilty of armed robbery and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.
He said it all began when he was given prison clothes that were too big for him.
He altered the size so that it would fit him perfectly.
He said he never knew his talent for fashion design until his inmates congratulated him and encouraged him to focus on it.
“I altered my prison clothes using a needle and wool without any sewing machine,” said Ali Designer.
He said he continued for the next three years altering and designing his prison mates’ clothes.
“The opportunity to learn more about fashion design came when the prison offered me an opportunity to attend two-year fashion design classes.
He, unfortunately, could not complete the course because he was transferred to another prison.
He served 10 years in prison and was later released on parole in 2021 for good behaviour.
Today, he is the founder of a clothing label called Unique exchange and he designs anything from traditional clothing, weddings, streetwear, evening wear, suits, school tracksuits, sports tracks and gowns.
Chauke said he wants to share his talent and skills with the youth.
He works from home and his goal is to start his fashion design school because he believes there is a lot of talent in Mamelodi.
He said he only wears the clothes he designed and made himself.
Chauke encouraged the youth to unleash their hidden talents and not to give up in life.
“Crime does not pay. Instead, it destroys people’s lives and futures. It’s better to find something that will keep you busy and away from crime,” he said.
He said his clothes are affordable and the community members are welcome to place orders.
