A lion is on the loose along the R511 near the Hennopstrail Hiking Trail . The public in the vicinity is advised to stay indoors with their children and pets.
A lion is on the loose along the R511 near the Hennops Hiking Trail on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Arthur Crewe of SRU Strategic Response Rescue Unit, the lion was spotted early on Wednesday morning.
“The lion was spotted around 02:00 by a security response officer on the R511 close to the Hennops Hiking Trail. We had a second sighting, so it is confirmed a lion.”
He added that all needed services were on the scene searching for the lion around midday on Wednesday.
“The relevant conservation departments have been informed. Although it was spotted on the Gauteng side of the border, lions roam far.”
Crewe advised the public in the vicinity to take precautionary steps by staying indoors with their children as well as pets.
“We really want to get this lion back safely. That is our number one goal.
“We are actively looking for the animal and ask residents not to shoot or approach the animal should they spot it. Contact us immediately if there are any sightings.”

This comes weeks after a lioness escaped as it was being transported from one game farm to another in the North West.
The lioness escaped while being transported from the Leeubosch Game Farm, through Setlagole and Stella, to another game farm in Tlakgameng.
The lion was found within hours of her escape and, unfortunately, shot and killed.
