Women need help to continue working as trolley assistants

Six Wolmer women, who work as trolley assistants at a parking lot to feed their families, could be out of their jobs if they do not get the proper certification.

The Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (Psira) requires individuals who work in parking lots as car guards, trolley assistants, etc. to be registered as security service providers.

To do this, they must complete the Grade-E security officer training course.

Working without these requirements is considered to be a criminal offence, but these women continue going out and risk getting caught as they cannot afford the costs of obtaining the certificate.

Despite this, they use a portion of the money they make to buy sweets which they hand out on Saturdays to not only bring smiles to people’s faces, but also in the hope that the kindness would be returned to them.

Wolmer resident Elmarie van der Schyff took the women under her wing after her son told her about their problems with the law.

“I have set up shifts for the ladies to work, which is on a commission basis. This means that they make between R20 to R50 a day.

“I bought them pink hats and T-shirts so that they could look neat and be proud of what they are doing. But we need to get them their Grade-E certificates that will allow them to operate legally.”

Van der Schyff said that she has tried to help by sponsoring clothes and sweets, but she cannot afford to pay for all the ladies’ certificates and needs help.

“I bought two-way radios for the women to communicate with me just in case they get into trouble. However, getting them the funds to do the course will allow them to work freely without getting into any trouble.

“Winter is coming and we want to make sure that the women have everything they need to provide for their families.”

All six women are breadwinners in their respective households and have to use what they get to put food on the table.
