Local NGO wants sports fans to fly national flag high

Fans-United is an initiative by the NGO that aims to have sports goers, regardless of their club affiliation wave the South African flag high when playing against international opposition.

Local NGO Kool 2B South African took its well-known love for patriotism to the Mamelodi Sundowns vs Al Ahly CAF clash this past weekend.

The NGO teamed up with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture’s Heraldry Unit to launch Kool 2B South African Fans-United at Loftus Stadium this past March 11.

Fans-United is an initiative by the NGO that aims to encourage sports fans regardless of the club they support to go to the stadium, and wave the South African flag when any local team plays against international opposition.

During the match, flags and handbooks detailing the effort were handed out to the fans in attendance.

“Sundowns fans were already in a very jovial mood so our presence was welcomed throughout the 90 minutes of the game. The South African flag and Sundowns were both flying high, the vibe was highly patriotic which we always appreciate,” said president and founder of Kool 2B South Africa, Khaya “Kool” Seoketsa.

“We must truly congratulate Mamelodi Sundowns’ fan convenor, Mr Cedric Moela on a fantastic job of mobilising the fans and we welcome all fellow South Africans on our journey of conquering Africa again,” Seoketsa continued.

The NGO says that it is equally grateful to the patriotic fans that flew the flag high during the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League clash which saw Sundowns defeat Al Ahly 5-2.

The NGO says that it next plans to visit Loftus Stadium again this upcoming April 15 for the game between the Vodacom Blue Bulls and Zebre Parma of Italy in the United Rugby Championships.

“We will be doing this for other teams and national teams of all sporting codes, but Mamelodi Sundowns Fans activation should take the credit for mobilising fans to come to the game. We were just supporting them as they were representing our national flag,” Sekoetsa said.
