Centurion to Pretoria rail line to reopen soon
It is part of a bigger plan to reconnect Johannesburg and Pretoria.
People commuting between Centurion and Pretoria can now breathe a sigh of relief after the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) announced it will reintroduce the train on the line.
Prasa spokesperson Andiswa Makanda confirmed that the Centurion station will reopen at the end of March.
Makanda said this was part of the agency’s plans to reopen the Pretoria to Johannesburg trains. She said trains were currently being tested at the Pretoria to Centurion stations.
“The resumption date for the Pretoria to Centurion line for public transport will be given soon. Prasa will open the line at the end of the month,” she added.
The agency’s spokesperson said this was part of a bigger plan to connect Johannesburg to Pretoria.
Prasa had suspended the Johannesburg to Pretoria corridor due to the destruction and vandalism of its infrastructure at the hands of syndicates and opportunistic criminals during the hard lockdown.
During Transport month in October, former minister of transport Fikile Mbalula reopened the Pretoria-Pienaarspoort line.
Addressing the media at the time, Mbalula vowed to recover rail services in all the rail corridors in the country.
He further said the resumption of services would ensure that South Africans, who have been severely impacted by the suspension of commuter rail services, will have access to a safer and more reliable public transport system.
The resumption of the Pretoria-Pienaarspoort line began with brand-new trains.
“This is in line with our commitment to return 10 priority corridors to service this year. Prasa is on track to rebuild and recover these commuter rail corridors, three of which are in Gauteng, with a budget of R2.7-billion,” the former minister said at the time.
