Rietondale residents want answers for construction on Proefplaas

Many residents are angry that they were not told about the construction in advance.

Rietondale residents want to know what is happening at Proefplaas.

The residents have complained that construction is taking place at the site that they were not told about.

Local councillor Leanne de Jager shed some light on the situation saying she believes the Department of Public Works (DPW) is building soccer fields in the area.

“Grading is being done on the agricultural land opposite Dirco (Department of International Relations and Cooperation) in Soutpansberg Road.

“This property belongs to DPW and I also have offices there,” said De Jager.

“Planning is to provide soccer fields for the more than 100 personnel working there.”

She said there had been miscommunication about where to level the land but this has been sorted out.

“The disturbed land close to Soutpansberg Road will be rehabilitated and the fields brought closer to the office building.”

De Jager added that planning for the fence south and north of the property is almost complete.

Specific regulations were recently changed which has necessitated that some paperwork be redone.

As soon as the contractor is appointed and the start date known, residents will be informed.

Residents however feel this is an unnecessary destruction of good soil and the noise of construction disturbs them during the day.

Comment from the DPW will be published as soon as it is received.
