East continue to be plagued by cable theft

Parts of the east of Pretoria have been plagued by power outages owing to cable theft and vandalism in the area.

Residents say cable theft is a headache in the area and some say they have experienced a week-long outage as a result.

Ward 82 councillor Siobhan Muller said Roderick Road, Rand Street, 4th Street, all the way to Menlo Park have been severely affected by cable theft in the past week.

Muller said her ward was “under siege”.

“We are under heavy attack, the culprits have targeted this area and they are making life hard for residents.

“On Wednesday night, they stole a whole lot of cables in Sussex street.

This incident follows the other one last week.

When the thieves steal the cables, it adds more to the power outages and worsens the already bad situation of energy in the city.”

Muller said the thieves use load-shedding as an opportunity to steal the cables.

“The incidents have spiked recently owing to load-shedding.

“The people committing these crimes seem like expect because within minutes they clean out a lot of cables.

When it is dark they get a chance to easily climb on the pole and cut out the cables because no one can see them or hear them,” she said.

She urged all residents to report suspicious activities to the police and the CPF groups.

An enquiry was sent to Tshwane metro but no response was received by the time of publication.
