Tshwane award-winning author to host children’s reading initiative campaign
“My aim is to get the little ones into the habit of reading and make reading fashionable,” says Tefo-Nkhumane
An award-winning author of children’s stories Lerato Tefo-Nkhumane will spearhead a children’s reading initiative campaign on April 15.
She said the purpose of this reading initiative aligns with her profession as an early childhood development (ECD) practitioner.
“I see a big need to instil reading to children while they are still in the ECD stages.
“My aim is to get the little ones into the habit of reading and make reading fashionable,” she said.
“Books took me out of rural areas and made me the person I am today. I just feel it is my duty to step in and bring change in the rural area where I come from.”
Tefo-Nkhumane registered an NPO to reach out to more children.
“I registered an NPO called Mrs. Nkhumane Children’s Care, hoping to reach more children through sharing knowledge, sharing books and instilling the culture of reading.
“I wish to see the initiative assisting two schools monthly in the rural areas to address the issue of stationery.
“I have always been someone who gets involved in initiatives, anything kids-related I’m there,” she said.
Tefo-Nkhumane published her book titled The Girl Who Was Not Happy in 2018.
“The book is about a young girl who had a rough childhood and found strength through God,” she said.
“I wrote my book over two years. It was published in 2018 and won African authors awards in the life skills category.
Her book has been translated into three languages, including English, isiZulu and Sepedi.
“My books are also in the Gauteng Libraries and Department of Education.”
Tefo-Nkhumane said this initiative will teach young children how to read and write.
“I have a few kids in the intermediary phase that I tutor and they will be in this reading initiative with me.
“They are so happy to assist, including my 15-year-old son.
“I am more motivated to do this and I plead with anyone having old books to assist by donating them to us.”
