Activist organises a fun run in honour of GBV victims
“I go all out to bring a change to my community.”

Community activist Kau Chiloane is planning to host a colour run in honour of the victims of gender-based violence (GBV) later this year.
Chiloane said the idea was motivated by the high rate of crime, drug abuse and GBV in his community.
“I go all out to bring change to my community. This is also a great way of meeting, mingling and understanding other community members,” he said.
Mamelodi resident Tsholofelo Simelane told Rekord that he supported Kau’s initiative as it sought to bring a much-needed change in their community.
“Our kids here don’t have much to do here, except for drowning themselves in liquor and drugs. I feel that our leaders are not doing enough and we don’t even have recreation facilities where children can play and be kids,” he added.
Mmojapelo Makume, from Mamelodi East, echoed Simelane’s sentiments by saying that there was a lack of recreational facilities in townships where their kids can go and play.
“We don’t have facilities like sports grounds, theatre buildings where our children can go showcase their respective talents. In such a situation, the only thing entertaining to them would be alcohol and drugs,” said Makume.
He continued to say he wasn’t delegating their responsibility as parents to the government, but emphasised that it had a role to play in developing young people in various communities by making sure that there were adequate facilities for kids to use.
“The government must make sure that the environment is conducive for kids to be able to showcase their talents. If our leaders don’t bring these facilities to our townships, things will remain the same and the future of this country will be in jeopardy,” Makume concluded.
Chiloane is also the founder of “It takes the community to raise a child”.
