Animal cancer organisation invites residents to donate

As part of its fundraising plans, the organisation will host the grand finale of the national Potjiekos competition on Saturday at the Lavender Kontreimark in Montana, Pretoria.

The Southern Africa Animal Cancer Association (Saaca) is calling on residents to come forward and donate to fund animal sterilisations in rural areas.

According to the organisation’s CEO, Munnik Marais, the contributions would not only be dedicated to the sterilisation process alone but to also educating the public about their work.

“Saaca is the first organisation in Africa to focus on cancer in animals and its main objective is to work with the University of Pretoria’s veterinary centre at Onderstepoort,” Marais said.

He further said the organisation also wanted to dispel the notion that cancer was only affecting human beings.

“Cancer has always been seen as a human illness, but little do people know that animals are also diagnosed and die of cancer as humans do. A study conducted by the organisation revealed that 45% of the dogs that reached 10 years of age or older died of cancer.”

Saaca was established as a need for animals with cancer. Ranked as the fourth best organisation of its kind in the world, according to Marais, Saaca will fill the gap for animals with cancer in Southern Africa.

As part of its fundraising plans the organisation will host the grand finale of the national Potjiekos competition on Saturday at the Lavender Kontreimark in Montana, Pretoria.

According to Marais, the competition will be adjudicated by highly esteemed judges.

“The competition is one of our fundraising and awareness projects that takes place at 12 different venues all over South Africa. The finale will take place on Saturday at LKMF from 08:00 until 14:00,” added Marais.

The CEO said this year’s theme is “Around the World”, adding that all contesters will be expected to compete under one roof.

“Professional judges from the industry will be judging the pots to announce the winning team at the end. The main reason for the event is to raise much-needed funds but also to create awareness that animals get cancer too.”

According to Munnik, there will be four prizes up for grabs: an overall winner, best team spirit, most original team according to the theme, and best individual person for the day.
