Local church donates food to two Mamelodi organisations

“Our commitment is to provide support to the furthest extent that our means allow; we look forward to doing this more often.”

A Mamelodi church recently donated food parcels to two charitable organisations in the area.

Mamelodi Uniting reformed church under the Mamelodi Christian Men’s Ministry presbytery outreach project donated to Ikageng old age home in Mamelodi East and Second Chance recovery centre in Mamelodi West, section D1 last Saturday.

Ikageng cares for elderly people and Second Chance drug addicts in recovery.

Masha Ramagoshi of the outreach said the food parcels were donated as part of giving back to the different communities and helping drug addicts rebuild their lives.

“The outreach is an annual event for members of three churches in Mamelodi – in Nellmapius, Kwa-Mhlanga – and [Cullinan diamond mining company] Premier Mine,” said Ramagoshi.

He said the outreach drove to the old age home in Mamelodi East and then to the rehabilitation centre and finally to the doors of 10 more needy families in Mamelodi and Nellmapius to hand out the food parcels.

He said the beneficiaries were identified by church members.

He said the outreach was started by the men’s ministry in 2022 in Cullinan and the reformed church was hosted this year.

“The congregants were given a list of the food to buy for the project and they made it possible by donating money from their own pockets,” he said, adding that the congregants of the Mamelodi church had asked that 10 women it had identified as needy be added to the list of beneficiaries.

He said the annual outreach was important for showing the community that “we cared about them”.

“Our commitment is to provide support to the furthest extent that our means allow; we look forward to doing this more often,” he concluded.

The food parcels consisted of maize meal, rice, cooking oil, sugar and canned food.
