Local church reaches out to the needy at Easter

The donation of clothing and health screening to elderly church members are part of the Dorcas Adventist community services.

A local church in Mamelodi donated clothing to the less fortunate and held a health screening for elderly people during the Easter weekend.

The Seventh Day Adventist church situated at Sunvalley in Mamelodi West made the generous donation as part of the Dorcas Adventist community services and needy families from Nkandla informal settlement in Section B3 were identified for the gift.

The church invited the Mamelodi CPF, Mamelodi West clinic and the community at large.

Grace Morulane of the church said congregants came together to give extra help to the communities and the clothing was donated by church members and community members.

“The objective of the Dorcas society is to help people physically and spiritually, in the name and spirit of Jesus,” Morulane said.

“Its concern is for every case of need, irrespective of creed, class, nationality or ethnic origin. The society attempts to meet emergency needs not provided for by other agencies.

“We have assisted a number of families at Nkandla informal settlement, and also held a prayer session for them and encouraged them to come to the church to see what other projects we are doing,” said Morulane.

“We get donations from the members of our church and the community, but we still need more to continue changing lives.

“We have learnt that Dorcas and a group of women were the ones taking care of her community by giving those clothes and food. It is our responsibility as a church to take care of the community.”

The Mamelodi West clinic conducted health screening and educated the community by encouraging them to continue taking care of themselves by monitoring their blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, etc.

The health screening was for everyone in the church including invited guests and CPF members.

Morulane added that this was not a once-off project of helping Nkandla residents but “we are also visiting other places like prisons to have a prayer session with them”.

Zoey Masuku ka Mabasa of Mamelodi CPF said the church partnered with the CPF in terms of community safety and to assist where possible.
