SAACA hosts successful fundraiser for animals with cancer
“Over 2 500 people attended our national potjiekos cooking finals,” says CEO Munnik Marais.
The Southern Africa animal cancer association (Saaca) hosted a successful fundraiser for its animal sterilisation programme for rural areas.
CEO Munnik Marais told Rekord the event was attended by thousands of people from in and around Tshwane.
“Over 2 500 people attended our national potjiekos cooking finals. I am pleased to announce that we got more than what we expected as the organisation,” said Marais.
The event was held at Lavender Kontreimark in Montana, north of Pretoria this past weekend.
This year’s event was under the theme “Around the World”. According to the organisation, the event attracts patrons from as far as Joburg, Vaal and even North West.
The weekend’s competition was adjudicated by professional judges from the industry, such as chef Somdaka, Andele Erne Sterne and Llewellyn Marais just to mention a few.
Judges were expected to adjudicate four categories – overall winner, best team spirit, most original team according to the theme and best individual person for the day.
The winners made away with a floating trophy and R15 000 worth of prizes.
One of the patrons, Lizbeth Mathews of Montana said the event is always nice and attracts different people from around Tshwane.
Mathews said the event was a nice way of meeting new people, and also making acquaintances as the food market is also held there.
“I enjoyed attending Munnik’s event, they are vibrant and fun. I am a foodist, so its one of the reasons I normally attend these events as they sell nice food,” she added.
Saaca is the first organisation in Africa to focus on cancer in animals and its main objective is to work with the University of Pretoria’s veterinary centre at Onderstepoort.
The organisation was established because of a need for animals with cancer and will stand in the gap for the animals with cancer in Southern Africa.
