Two southbound N1 lanes now open for traffic

There are still heavy delays as peak hour is slowly gearing up.

By Monday afternoon, the two southbound lanes on the N1 highway have been opened for traffic while the other two remain closed as cleaning was still in progress following an accident earlier the day.

This was according to Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso.

Mabaso said there were still heavy delays as peak hour traffic was slowly gearing up.

All four lanes were closed up earlier this morning after an accident on the N1 to Pretoria involving two trucks.

One of the vehicles was believed to have been transporting hazardous materials and got into an accident with the other truck just after the N4 Proefplaas interchange.

“A hazardous material company contracted to Sanral was then dispatched to monitor the situation as well as commence cleaning and containment of the hazardous material. A person was treated on the scene and transported to Steve Biko academic hospital,” Mabaso said.

He earlier said law enforcement authorities were on the scene and advised motorists to use alternative routes.

According to Mabaso, both trucks were on fire.

“The one truck was fully engulfed by the flames while the other was only partially on fire.
