Tshwane created 8 500 jobs in last quarter of last year
“Additional projects have been developed to enhance wider community safety, to reduce crime and violence against women, children and youths, and to combat substance abuse.”

The Tshwane metro’s public employment programme (PEP) has created 8 500 job opportunities, it has claimed.
MMC for economic development and spatial planning councillor Hannes Coetzee said the PEP has created work opportunities during the Phase 2 of successful recruitment drives on August 4 and December 1 in 2022.
Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the programme was funded by the National Treasury, which he said continued to make a much-needed impact on addressing unemployment among Tshwane residents.
“This opportunity makes a significant impact on the unemployed members of the community who have been the worst affected by the unemployment crisis.
“Beneficiaries include the youth, women and persons with disabilities from all seven regions of Tshwane who have been appointed using a fair, transparent, audited lottery selection process,” Mashigo said.
He said fortunate residents were placed in various projects such as urban management, including inner city cleaning, community safety, township economic development and industrial park infrastructure maintenance as well as informal settlement management among other departments.
Mashigo said he believes that participants will acquire all the necessary marketable skills through their participation in the different departments they were placed in.
“Additional projects have been developed to enhance wider community safety, to reduce crime and violence against women, children and youths, and to combat substance abuse.”
Coetzee said the metro had made major strides in making sure that it delivered on the promises it made to Tshwane residents.
“We remain determined to positively impact the current socio-economic circumstances for PEP participants and to benefit the wider Tshwane,” the MMC added.
During the first phase of the intake for the 2022 to 2023 financial year, the metro selected a total of 5 014 in all regions with 2 741 signing contracts. In the second selection, the number rose to 7 604, with a signing of 5 854 which brought the total of hired residents from all 7 regions, to 8 595.
