Local NGO removes 26 pit latrines

The removals took place on April 15-16 in informal areas such as Mshongoville, Jeffsville, Phomolong and Renkeng.

The Soulbent project removed 26 pit latrines in the squatter camps of Pretoria West recently under the #Eradicatespittoilet campaign.

Known for its weekly clean-ups, the NGO began the campaign earlier this month as it believes that pit latrines pose an inherent danger to the community.

The removals took place on April 15-16 in informal areas such as Mshongoville, Jeffsville, Phomolong and Renkeng.

“We are very pleased that we managed to eradicate 26 household toilet pits, we can only do so much, however we are calling on stakeholders to get in touch with us,” said Soulbent co-founder Mashudu Makhado

According to the NGO the issue has been ongoing for over 20 years in the area and aims to help more than 10 000 families currently affected by it.

Soulbent is calling for assistance with supplies, more especially pit gobblers and bio enzymes for the pit toilets.

This toilet cleaner is an eco-friendly powerful waste digester. It is safe to use around people, and animals and will not affect the environment. It is an enzyme that “eats” the waste in the latrine and gets rid of the smell.

The NGO is calling on stakeholders including the Tshwane metro as well as the departments of health, environmental affairs and housing to join the fight.

Soulbent does its work on Fridays and Saturdays after school when youth are available and is calling on local stakeholders to assist with supplies.

Residents are also invited to take part in the NGO’s upcoming Volunteers Day project this May 4, where they aim to have 100 volunteers help clean up the Moganwe River.

Moving forward, the NGO aims to continue generating awareness around issues such as rainwater harvesting amid a water crisis, river clean-ups and illegal dumping sites, food gardening, recycling and rhino poaching.
