Naledi residents clear illegal dumping site
During the clean-up, residents discovered that dog and cat carcasses cats thrown out in the night by residents were the cause of an unbearable stench.

Residents of Naledi extension U came together late on Sunday afternoon to clean up the illegal dumpsite next to the Kingsley hostel in Mamelodi West.
The residents had complained that the unhygienic conditions created put their health at risk and caused a bad smell.
Resident Dineo Mokwena said during the clean-up, they discovered that dog and cat carcasses thrown out in the night by residents of surrounding areas were the cause of an unbearable stench.
She said the residents brought their own garden tools to the clean-up near Kgosi Street in Naledi extension U Kingsley hostel from 16:00 till late.
“We are residing next to Kingsley hostel and there is an open space which people have turned into an illegal dumping site whereby they throw away anything from carcasses of dogs and cats, animal hide, soiled nappies and other rubble causing a terrible smell,” said Mokwena.
She said the residents were unable to open windows for fresh air because of the terrible smell, and they were becoming sick.
“We have an infestation of rats, mosquitoes and flies,” she said.
She said the issue of illegal dumping was a huge problem in Mamelodi and the residents needed to unite to fight it together.
Another resident, Masekela Magoro said their health was at risk.
He said they once confronted and chased the illegal dumpers away and the area became better.

“Unfortunately our neighbour whose house was next to the illegal dumping passed on and the situation got out of hand with no one chasing them away,” said Magoro.
“The culprits even dump their waste in broad daylight, while others dump at night because they don’t want to be seen because they know very well that what they are doing is wrong,” he said.
The residents said they were fed up with people illegally dumping next to their houses.
Mokwena said they have spoken to their local councillor, who agreed to send waste collectors to remove the rubble the residents were unable to.
She said they would meet the residents on Wednesday to discuss the way forward to keep the spot clean.
