Local production telling daily stories through plays
“The play as a whole was moreover created to address HIV and to encourage young people to stay safe and know their status.”
Getdown, a local theatre production company, is turning everyday life experiences into plays influenced by the people of different communities in Pretoria.
Their goal is to inform, educate and curb the increase of ongoing social ills affecting local youths.
It has recently staged a musical play titled Youth Towards Change, which has been performed in different areas in and around Gauteng.

This was staged as part of the National Department of Health’s strategy of spreading vital life-changing experiences and addressing the increase in HIV cases and teenage pregnancies in communities.
“Our main focus is to educate, raise awareness, make people relate to our plays and spread information to disadvantaged communities. Especially vulnerable groups particularly the youth and women,” said Getdown founder and executive director, Matome Rapetsoa.
“The play as a whole was moreover created to address HIV and to encourage young people to stay safe and know their status.”

He said that their “awareness production” addresses a need that exists; hence, the plays are well-received by audiences all over the country.
The plays take the audience through some of the challenges the youth go through daily, which is why the company strives to ensure that the plays are featured in many communities as possible.
Rapetsoa loves art and believes that the “purpose of art is to arouse emotions, ignite participation and accelerate positive change”.
