Disgruntled security guards to march on Tuesday
They plan to start at 09:00 assembling at Princess Park in Arcadia, Central Pretoria.
A group of aggrieved security guards are planning a march in central Pretoria on Tuesday, April 25, to protest the metro still outsourcing security services despite a 2018 decision to insource them.
The group have been staging ongoing protests this year.
They invited security guards that are working for private companies that render services to the metro to attend the demonstration.
The march will start at 09:00 at Princess Park in Arcadia, central Pretoria.
They will march on Francis Baard Street to Bosman Street and then to Madiba Street.
The group’s demands include;
– Implementation of the 2018 council resolution that states the metro must insource 4 000 security guards
– Continuation of “phase 1” and qualified security personnel must be insourced
– Removal of foreigners and unknown personnel who are insourced
– The stopping of late payments
– A formal meeting with the city manager and mayor
The security guards have been protesting regularly since the beginning of the year, closing down areas around Tshwane multiple times.
They claim that at least 22 private companies have not paid them for services rendered and that these companies are not compliant or registered with the UIF and the labour department. The protesters are calling for an end to contracts with private companies and for complete absorption.
In the memorandum, they plan to hand to the city council, they stated, “we, as security officers, are recognising that the practice of outsourcing is exploitative and dehumanising”.
The metro has previously stated that it has no obligation to pay the security guards as they are employees of the relevant service providers not the City.
