Solomon Mahlangu road upgrade 62% complete

The department is aware of the delays that halted progress and is working around the clock to address them and fast-track completion.

The R300-million Solomon Mahlangu road upgrade, which started in 2018, is expected to be wrapped up in September, according to the Gauteng government.

The Department of Roads and Transport said the initial plan was to:

– turn Road K69 from Lynnwood to Mamelodi into a dual carriageway
– rehabilitate the remainder of the carriageway to improve the traffic flow
– build three new road-over-rail bridges on the new carriageway

“The rehabilitation and upgrades of this road entail that we create a smart mobility-free flow of traffic, reduce congestion and improve road safety,” said department spokesperson Melitah Madiba.

The project was supposed to have been completed in 2022 but was delayed.

Madiba, however, said the project was delayed by many factors such as Covid-19.

“There have been various contributing factors such as the impact of the lockdown as several contractors shut down, community unrest, business forum disruptions and contractor poor performance among other factors,” Madiba told Rekord, adding that the completion date was therefore pushed back to September.

She said the project is currently 62% complete.

“The department is aware of the delays that halted progress and is working around the clock to address them and fast-track completion,” Madiba said.

“This road is one of the most used and the area is experiencing traffic congestion, especially during peak hours, which is impacting the road users negatively.

“It is for these and many other reasons that we have introduced an accelerated programme to ensure that the road is completed within the new communicated time frame.”
