Copper Leaf residents tackle crime head-on
“We are grateful as residents to be part of such an initiative from the police.”
Local NGO Khuluma family counselling, Copper Leaf Estate community, and Erasmia police conducted an awareness campaign on crime recently.
The campaign was inspired by the recent spate of petty crimes in the area, according to Emelda Malgas, one of the residents who took part in the campaign.
“We are grateful as residents to be part of such an initiative from the police. It shows that these matters also concerns them a lot. If we, as residents, don’t take the initiative or take part, we will forever complain about the police’s lack of support without understanding their shortfalls,” she added.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Tumisang Moloto said Tuesday’s programme was part of the national police programme, which sought to bring back people’s confidence in the force.
“The programme wants to inform residents on how to report any crimes,” said Moloto.
On the day, police distributed 200 pamphlets throughout the entire neighbourhood.
The pamphlets contained information about process that residents should follow when reporting cases such as gender-based violence, substance abuse and general safety tips.
The campaign was also supported by the SAPS’s social crime prevention unit in partnership with other stakeholders including private security services.
Moloto thanked members of the community for participating in the programme.
“Active community members make it easy for police to build relationships with them. It also seeks to solidify the relation that will in turn result in a good working relationship between us and the general community.”
