Curro Roodeplaat excited about new sport activity at school

“For several years we have been dreaming of starting kayaking since we are located next to the Roodeplaat dam.”

An independent school in the north of Pretoria was excited to be adding kayaking as a sports activity.

“For several years we have been dreaming of starting kayaking at Curro Roodeplaat since we are located next to the Roodeplaat dam,” said Curro School  spokesperson Monica Kepadisa .

“Our dreams finally came true when our paths crossed with the Academy for Canoe Development.”

The school recently joined hands with the Academy for Canoe Development, which provides learners with great opportunities to learn about kayaking.

Kepadisa said the school assists learners with training and provides them with the required specialist equipment such as canoes, lifejackets, and paddles for training and races.

The school has developed various provincial, national and international champions through the years. It provided the learners with coaches that have level 1 or level 2 coaching certificates from the International Canoe Federation.

The coaches assist in developing learners through character building, different skills training and teaching the learners the skills needed to participate in events. They focus on both social and physical development during each session.

The school started with their training at the beginning of 2023 with grades 2 to 7 learners.

“The training days are Mondays and Wednesdays and we make sure that the learners are transported to the Roodeplaat dam from school.”

According to Kepadisa, the learners started kayaking in a small, demarcated area in February. They have already graduated to the more challenging open waters of the dam and lakes in and around Gauteng.

“Their progress has been exceptional. We are very proud of their achievements and the smiles that we see after every race. We look forward to the future of this sport in our school,” she said.

The learners have already taken part in competitive races and completed the Florida Lake Flatwater race on April 15 and the JCC Flatwater race on April 22.

Over the coming April long weekend, some learners will take part in the SA Sprints and SA Schools 2023 races.
