Laudium police encourage Itireleng community to break silence on GBV
During an anti-bullying and drug talk held at the Laudium primary school, police warned the Grade 7 learners against drugs.
Gender-based violence is a scourge that cannot be left unattended whether by the community or the police.
This is according to station commander Lieutenant-Colonel David Sithole, who spoke to Itireleng community members during an awareness campaign held over the weekend.
Sithole encouraged the Itireleng community to stand up to any form of violence against women and children.
“We as members of the community must stand together to fight this pandemic. The police are doing the best they can to fight this scourge, but we cannot do it alone.”
Sergeant Simon Chokoe said the campaign aimed to encourage community members to break the silence on GBV.
Chokoe said this was the police’s effort to root out violence among community members and in different households.
“We sensitised community members about GBV and human trafficking as it also forms part of abuse. We further taught them how to report these crimes,” said Chokoe.
He said the campaign was brought together by different units at the police station, which included the social crime prevention/communications units, the CPF, and Kopano Manyano, an NPO organisation.
The Laudium police force also conducted its anti-bullying and drug talks at the Laudium primary school, last week Friday.
According to Chokoe, police spoke to all the Grade 7 learners as they were at that stage in their teenage lives where they get exposed to substances such as drugs and alcohol abuse.
He said learners were cautioned not to fall prey to drug lords who promise them a “nice life” by selling drugs.
“We advised learners to respect each other and try not to bully others as that might lead to their fellow learners committing suicide. We also warned them not to be allowed to be used in the commission of any sort of crime,” Chokoe added.
According to the Laudium spokesperson, the police managed to reach more than 102 learners from different schools in the area.
