Police spoil local learners’ cannabis celebration

The police searched Pretoria West and Elandspoort high schools on April 20 in hopes of preventing students from engaging in such behaviour.

Lunch boxes containing marijuana muffins were found after Pretoria West police recently conducted searches at two high schools in the area.

Police raided the schools after noticing that the learners were posting the code “420” commonly used by cannabis enthusiasts to commemorate April 20.

“Our surprise visit to the high schools comes after numerous social media circulations by learners stating the so-called ‘420’ is an official day of celebrating weed use and alleged plans for bringing it to schools and smoking it,” said spokesperson Constable Sibongile Vuma.

Police searched Pretoria West high school and Elandspoort high school on April 20 in hopes of preventing students from engaging in such behaviour.

“The police did not take the information lightly but acted upon it by doing visits to local high schools,” Vuma continued.

“At Pretoria West high, certain classes among the grade 9s and 10s were identified as areas of concern, and as the dogs were doing searches on the premises, the police were alerted to some lunch boxes containing muffins.”

Vuma said the muffins were later confirmed to contain an abundant amount of dagga and were confiscated to be given to the principal.

“No learner was found in possession of any dagga but were warned it was an illegal act to be in possession of dagga or selling of any item on the school premises,” Vuma stated,

The search in Elandspoort also did not turn up any drugs and learners were addressed about the dangers of engaging with drugs as well as how having a criminal record can destroy one’s future.

“Most of the learners were very appreciative of the initiative, and so were the teachers.

“The [Elandspoort] principal encouraged us to visit the school more to help get the message to learners that no crime shall happen under their watch,” Vuma concluded.
