16 beneficiaries in Eersterust finally receive title deeds

“I am reminding homeowners that a title deed is a legal document and must be kept in a safe place as proof of ownership. Losing or misplacing this valuable document will result in enormous legal expenses to replace the original document,” says MMC Madzebatela.

The MMC for Human Settlements personally handed over 16 title deeds to beneficiaries who have been on the waiting list for a long time.

MMC Ofentse Madzebatela, together with metro officials, embarked on a door-to-door campaign to issue title deeds in Eersterust region 6 on Tuesday, April 25.

The Eersterust project consists of 481 low-cost housing units, of which 299 title deeds registrations were finalised.

Madzebatela said the deeds “will empower beneficiaries and their families with the dignity of a place to call home”.

“They now have an official and legal document that proves that they were the rightful owners of their properties.”

Some of the residents had been living in the area for more than 30 years without title deeds.

The title deeds were primarily handed over to vulnerable groups such as the elderly and people with disabilities.

One of the recipients was an elderly couple that has been living in their house for over 30 years.

They were pleased to receive the important document that will provide them with the security of tenure and finally restore their dignity.

“I am reminding homeowners that a title deed is a legal document and must be kept in a safe place as proof of ownership. Losing or misplacing this valuable document will result in enormous legal expenses to replace the original document,” said Madzebatela.

According to the department, handing over title deeds is an ongoing and core priority of the multiparty coalition government.

“We remain committed to empowering residents and asserting their property rights,” he said.
