Earth Day commemorated at Centurion school
The day’s activities included planting trees, working on a vegetable garden with seed donations.
The Gautrain management agency and Tshwane metro celebrated Earth Day by planting trees and teaching children how to plant a vegetable garden.
Observed annually on April 22, Earth Day is a reminder to not lose sight of the urgency of climate change amid other pressing global issues.
The theme for Earth Day 2023 was “Invest in our planet”.
Earth Day activities started on April 20, when the Gautrain management agency and the Tshwane visited the Ditshego House of Laughter, a place of safety in Centurion.

Vulnerable children are assisted with their schoolwork, receive nutritious meals, and can play in a safe environment.
The day’s activities included planting trees and working on a vegetable garden with seed donations.
The children also received a copy of the Gautrain children’s book on climate change called Yolisa’s mighty mission.
Guatrain’s CEO Tshepo Kgobe said individual actions on climate change count.
“We can all be part of the solution, for example, Tshwane residents can assist in reducing traffic congestion and pollution.
“An average single trip on the Gautrain saves 2.8kg of carbon dioxide per passenger compared to a private car,” he said.

The MEC for Transport and Logistics, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, and the MMC for Environment and Agriculture Ziyanda Zwane also came to speak with the children.
The United Nations 2022 sustainable development goal report highlighted that between 2015 and 2030, annual passenger traffic globally is projected to increase by 50% and the number of cars on the road is likely to double.
According to the UN, human-induced climate change is the largest, most persuasive threat to the natural environment and societies the world has ever experienced and the poorest are paying the heaviest price.
