Nellmapius school celebrate Freedom Day
“The Freedom Day celebration was about teaching learners about their history and the importance of this day.”
Learners from Nellmapius extension 1 primary school celebrated Freedom Day by learning about the history of South Africa and why it is important to vote.
The celebration was held at the school premises on April 26.
Freedom Day is celebrated annually to commemorate the first post-apartheid elections held on April 27, 1994.
School principal Nora Malefo said this is the first time they celebrated Freedom Day and they plan to celebrate the event annually.
She said they have decided to turn Freedom Day into a culture of the school to celebrate the event annually with different themes.
“The Freedom Day celebration was about teaching learners about their history and the importance of this day,” said Nora.
“On this day, 29 years ago, millions of our people voted for the first time together as equal citizens to elect a government of their choice.”
She said it’s crucial to educate children on the significance of the South African flag and Freedom Day.

“The learners were taught about human rights and where the Constitution of South Africa comes from. The teachers also taught learners about the value of elections and why they should vote,” said Malefo.
Educator Irene Mashele coordinated the event by creating activities on Wednesday during the school’s extra curriculum activities which allows learners to show off their different talents.
“The learners started the programme with drum majorettes, drama productions on human rights and reciting poems about the release of Mandela after spending 27 years in prison, singing and performing Sarafina dance,” said Malefo.
