North residents expose ‘illegal’ dumper
An alleged illegal dumper was caught in the act in Wonderboom Street on Friday.
Fed-up Pretoria North residents have exposed a man for illegally dumping litter in their area.
The alleged illegal dumper was caught in the act in Wonderboom Street on Friday.
“As north residents, we have a group chat that we created to inform one another about the things that happen in our area. We got a message on Friday to go check as someone had been seen dumping at a site that has already been cleaned not long ago,” said Theohola Erasmus.

Another local Quentin Meyer said he witnessed the incident on Friday as he was driving by.
“I saw a man carrying a wheelbarrow full of dirt. I believed he was going to throw it at the nearest place, which he did. Luckily I saw him just in time,” he said.
Meyer informed people in his area. One of the residents came out with her husband and caught the dumper in action. They reported the incident to the metro.
Lindela Mashigo of the metro confirmed that an illegal dumping complaint was received.
“The city has a public cleansing team that performs litter picking at Wonderboom Street on a daily basis as well as other business districts,” said Mashigo .
“We got a call from one of the residents concerning the illegal dumper.
“Police responded and encouraged the dumper to remove the waste (building rubble) and in the past week we have charged six people for illegal dumping,” said Sergeant Palsee, who went out to speak to the alleged offender.

Mashigo said all residents are provided with a 240 litre bin. “If you end up with more waste, you must request either a second 240L bin or skip bin. The City always strives to collect waste in accordance with the schedule.
“However, holidays and other situations may interrupt the schedule. The City apologises profusely for such an inconvenience.
“The metro will issue a R5 000 fine to anyone found guilty for illegal dumping,” Mashigo warned.
