NGO commemorates Freedom Day with local schools
“It seems days like these are an excuse for excessive drinking and immoral acts so we reached out to learners and youth to begin a culture of celebrating this day patriotically.”
Freedom Park was recently abuzz with patriotic celebrations commemorating Freedom Day with various stakeholders and schools.
Kool 2B South African’s freedom appreciation week (April 20-30) held their main event at Salvokop, Freedom Park on Thursday.
The day’s events were inspired by the need to bring back a sense of appreciation to the significance of the public holiday, said founder Khaya “Kool” Seoketsa.
“We at Kool 2B South African have been worried about how we South Africans celebrate our national public holidays, in particular, Freedom Day,” Seoketsa said.
“It seems days like these are an excuse for excessive drinking and immoral acts so we reached out to learners and youth to begin a culture of celebrating this day patriotically.”

Some of the schools that attended the commemoration included Jafta Fourie primary school, Jafta Mahlangu high school and Dulce September primary school.
Some of the parties involved included Freedom Park, the National Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Coca-Cola, Fanta, the Department of Government Communication and Information Systems (GCIS), and the Tshwane metro.
The day started with a parade of the national flag, followed by a hoisting session and singing of the national anthem. Learners were told of the importance of Freedom Day and the sacrifices that fallen liberators made to ensure that democracy is enjoyed by all.
A tour of Freedom Park was conducted for the learners. Later, Robbie Senoele of GCIS spoke on the importance of democratic gains, addressed challenges and called on all to engage more in active citizenry.
Other commemorations that the NGO did during the appreciation week included a wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of Solomon Mahlangu as well as visits to Salvokop and Westpark primary schools.

Kool 2B South African later also visited Mahlangu’s grave with learners from Jafta Mahlangu high school learners before Freedom Day.
“We are indeed grateful to the learners, educators, and youth who sacrificed their time for this historic and patriotic celebration, and thanks to our sponsors for providing refreshments for the learners,” Seoketsa concluded.
